After going through any event that changes your life, we could refer to it as traumatic. It’s human nature to reassess everything in our lives like relationships, work, goals, just about everything gets put on the table. If the traumatic event is associated with grief or pain, it is human nature to try to escape or stop the pain. Many of us experience the loss of a loved one, divorced, drug addiction, illnesses, or other traumatic events. All these events can be traumatic and painful. Recently, I experienced that loss. My mother passed away after a long battle with multiple health problems. I began questioning not only my job, my goals, and even why do anything if, in the end, we all will end up dead. |

Be mindful of your present state The events of the last few months with COVID-19 have not helped. Many of us have been worried, had to stay home and after months of this situation, we are tired of living like this. On top of that, some of us have experienced a traumatic event. Many people in the USA have lost loved ones to COVID-19, marriages have come to an end, people have experienced worsening of their health, and many life-changing events. Humans struggle to deal with complicated questions and logic during exhausting events like COVID-19, where escape feels like the only way out. It’s easy to believe that if I can get away from here, it will be better – without considering what the alternative may be. Unfortunately, with the COVID-19 pandemic, there is almost nowhere to escape. Since we cannot quit and leave, let us pause and practice mindful breathing. Give yourself the grace to rest and come back to make decisions when emotions are on a more even keel. It’s important to decipher whether you’re burnt out from the circumstances of COVID-19 or from the traumatic events or maybe even both. Reconnect with your “why” While COVID-19 has been all-consuming, it is important to remember what is important to you and “why” If you experience loss, allow yourself to be sad and experience these feeling, seek help if unable to work through them. For those who experienced job loss, take this opportunity to re-assess what you want to do with your life, and even why you chose your career. Covid-19 doesn’t change your dreams and aspirations but may make them harder. This is why that “Why” is so important, it will give you the resilience you need to continue to pursue your dreams. For those who experienced loss, the pain can be unbearable. Our first instinct is to try to stop the pain. You need to experience the loss and go through the grieving and hopefully become a better person. Many of us need help when grieving and it should not view it as a sign of weakness rather a sign that you know when you need to ask for help. It is natural to assess every aspect of our lives from your career to your goals. Remembering the “Why” you chose your career, “why” you want to improve your health or even “why” you want to help others. The “why” will help you overcome the challenges and center yourself on the essential connections to what is important to you. Now is a good time to re-assess your dreams and goals, are they still the same or do you want to change them? With every change, we have to dig down and figure out how to get to the core of what matters to us. There are always mountains to climb in our ever-changing lives. It doesn’t change the meaning of our work. While COVID-19 makes it more complicated to find your ‘why”, given it is an immense, denser, and scarier thing than most other challenges we face, but it’s not insurmountable. If you read the stories of what people are doing and how they’re connecting, you see that it is still possible to find purpose and meaning, if we’re willing to recognize it. But when you’re exhausted, we see the world through dark glasses. You need to pause, do mindful breathing, and then focus on the positive, on what you can do. Take this opportunity to really find out what it is you want to do and why. Take this opportunity to make new connections, to improve all connections, to re-connect with those you lost touch with, and to help improve a bad situation. |
